“Adam and Eve”

When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.

8 Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the LORD God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the LORD God among the trees of the garden. 9 But the LORD God called to the man, “Where are you?”

10 He answered, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.”

11 And he said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?”

12 The man said, “The woman you put here with me–she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.”

13 Then the LORD God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?”

The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”

14 So the LORD God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this,

“Cursed are you above all the livestock
and all the wild animals!
You will crawl on your belly
and you will eat dust
all the days of your life.
15 And I will put enmity
between you and the woman,
and between your offspring and hers;
he will crush your head,
and you will strike his heel.”
(Genesis 3:6-15; NIV)

The first man and woman … the first sinners.

God fashioned them … breathed into them the breath of life. What will happen when they have to die? He joined them … planted a special place for them to live. What happens when they have to leave?  He warned them … protected them from the lies of the evil one. What happens when they ignore the warning and live in the lie?

As He watched the serpent seduce the woman … as He watched the woman share the forbidden fruit with her man … as He gives them the right to choose the wrong … what must He feel – how must He grieve. So what happens when His beloved ones make their choice – bear their shame and hide in fear?

They are hiding from the One, who knows all … ashamed before the One, who lives in glory … accusing each other and the One, who made them one. What will God do? How will He react to their weakness – their rebellion – their unfaithfulness?

Let us watch and learn:

Before He drives them from the garden … from the tree of life … from the place He will eventually bring them back to …

He comes to find them … the beginnning of “to seek and save”.

He asks them to consider where they are … a question intended to help them come to their senses.

He helps them learn from their mistake … for the mistake will happen again – in all men for all time.

He curses their enemy instead of them … though there will be painful consequences.

He covers their shame … at the cost of two innocent animals.

And even His final act of judgment was an expression of His love … for He did not want them to live forever separated from His presence and His unsearchable riches.

So … when someone I love has sinned … when they are hiding, because they are overcome by guilt – paralyzed by fear – conflicted by anger, how should I treat them … how should I help them … how should I love them?

How about finding them? Listening to them? Being on their side? Covering their shame? Loving them in spite of the judgment?
